August, similar to July, derives its name from a prominent Roman figure, Emperor Augustus (formerly Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus). In 8 BCE, the Roman Senate renamed Sextilis (Latin for "sixth month") to August as an honor, mirroring the earlier renaming of July after Julius Caesar. This recognition stemmed from Augustus's significant accomplishments during this month, such as his initial consulship, various military victories, and the conquest of Egypt.
Originally containing 29 days, Sextilis was extended to 30 days under Julius Caesar. A widely known, though unconfirmed, account suggests that Augustus further increased its length to 31 days to match July, supposedly by taking a day from February. Initially the sixth month (Sextilis), it became the eighth month following calendar revisions. The name "August" and its 31-day duration have endured in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, serving as a lasting commemoration of the emperor.
August Today
August in the US is the last full month of summer, marked by peak heat, vacations, and a transition to the back-to-school routine. It's a time for outdoor activities and last-minute trips, but retailers also promote back-to-school sales.
While no federal holidays occur, August features observances like Women's Equality Day and quirky "National Days," plus the Perseid meteor shower. It's a prime month for summer produce, but also a period for potential heat waves and storms. Overall, August balances summer leisure with the approaching academic and professional year.
The August Zodiac
In Western tropical astrology, August is shared by Leo (July 23 - August 22, The Lion, Fire, Fixed, ruled by the Sun, known for confidence, charisma, generosity, leadership, creativity, but can be attention-seeking or stubborn) and Virgo (August 23 - September 22, The Maiden, Earth, Mutable, ruled by Mercury, characterized by analytical, practical, detail-oriented, hardworking nature but can be critical or worry-prone). Therefore, those born in August are either Leo or Virgo.
The August Birthstone
August has three birthstones: peridot, spinel, and sardonyx, each with unique colors and histories. Peridot, believed to bring positive energy, is a green gem formed in Earth's mantle, historically mined by Egyptians and now primarily in Arizona. Spinel, historically mistaken for ruby and sapphire, comes in various colors and symbolizes hope. Sardonyx, a banded chalcedony used for carvings since ancient Egypt, represents courage and stability. This trio offers diverse choices for August birthdays.
