Originally the fifth month in the Roman calendar and called Quintilis, July was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE by the Roman Senate to honor Julius Caesar. This was his birth month and a tribute to his implementation of the Julian calendar in 45 BCE. Quintilis had 31 days, a length Caesar retained. This renaming set a precedent, with August later named after Augustus. July's name and length have remained unchanged since these reforms.
