June's origins trace back to the Roman calendar. It was likely named after Juno, the queen of the gods associated with marriage, or possibly after the iuniores, a Latin word for "younger ones" or "younger" in a plural form.

Originally the fourth month in the 10-month Roman calendar, June had 29 days before Julius Caesar increased it to 30. It held agricultural significance for harvesting and was host to festivals like Ludi Taurii and Vestalia. June's name and position have remained largely unchanged since the Julian reforms.
