The Origin of November

November's name comes from the Latin "novem" (nine), reflecting its original position as the ninth month in the early Roman calendar, which started in March. Though January and February were later added, shifting November to the eleventh month, it kept its "ninth month" name.

Initially having 29 days, Julius Caesar set its length to 30 days. For the Romans, November signified the end of harvests and preparation for winter. Despite failed attempts at renaming, its original, numerically based name persisted into the Gregorian calendar.

November Today

November in the US is marked by autumnal changes, national holidays, and the start of holiday shopping. Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday, is a key holiday focused on gratitude and a traditional feast. Black Friday and Cyber Monday initiate the Christmas shopping season with major sales. Veterans Day (November 11th) honors veterans, coinciding with global observances. Native American Heritage Month celebrates Native American cultures.

November also hosts awareness campaigns like Movember for men's health and National Diabetes/Alzheimer's/Family Caregivers Month. The month sees the end of fall foliage, cooler weather, and the end of Daylight Saving Time. Football dominates sports, and indoor activities increase.

Overall, November in the US is a transitional month bridging fall and winter holidays with important observances and the beginning of holiday commerce.

The November Zodiac

The month of November features two zodiac signs:

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21): Individuals born from October 23rd to November 21st fall under the sign of Scorpio. This sign is symbolized by the Scorpion and is associated with the element of Water and a fixed quality. Scorpios are often characterized as passionate, resourceful, determined, and intuitive.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21): People born from November 22nd to December 21st are Sagittarians. This sign is symbolized by the Archer and is associated with the element of Fire and a mutable quality. Sagittarians are typically described as adventurous, optimistic, honest, and philosophical.

The November Birthstone

November's birthstones are the warm-toned Topaz and Citrine. Topaz may derive its name from the Greek island Topazios or the Sanskrit word tapas ("fire"). Historically, any yellow-brown-orange gem was called topaz, causing confusion with citrine.

Ancient Egyptians linked yellow topaz to their sun god, while Greeks believed it gave strength. Renaissance Europeans thought it broke spells, and in India, it symbolized long life and intelligence. Topaz naturally comes in various colors, with much blue topaz being treated colorless topaz. It has long been a November birthstone.

Citrine's name comes from the French word for "lemon," referencing its yellow hue. A quartz variety, citrine was used in ancient Roman jewelry and was believed to calm tempers and attract wealth, earning it the nickname "merchant's stone." Most modern citrine is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine is rarer. Citrine became an official November birthstone in 1912, offering a more affordable option than topaz. Both gems provide warm colors suitable for November birthdays and have rich histories.
